After leaving vientienne, rhyan and i arrived in Kong Lo after another lengthy bus ride. Here, we asked around the village for a homestay, which was a super cool experience! Absolutely no one in the village spoke any english, and we hadn't been able to find a phrase book last minute in Vientienne... so it was pretty interesting... eventually we figured out where to shower, which was in the muddy stream next to the village. As soon as rhyan got in the water, about a dozen little boys started following him around splashing him! And then all held out their little hands and copied him as he shampooed his hair, making fun of the white foam in eachothers hair. Afterwards, when we headed out to go to dinner, a dozen little girls all ran up to me and began holding my hands and arms, so i could spin them around and around in circles, so we spent as long as we could spinning them, but got so dizzy! After our restaurant dinner, we returned to the homestay, where they had prepared us another dinner, of home grown rice, seaweed and buffalo. I thought it was delicious! And then the whole family came out and put clumps of sticky rice in our hands and began chanting as they tied white cotton strings around our wrists, which we believe to be a good luck thing perhaps, or a religious thing, no one we've talked to is quite sure, though its quite a common thing. They also proudly showed us the bamboo carton of frogs which would be for dinner the following night. The actual sleeping place was just a shared mattress on the floor under a misquito net, but the people were all so friendly! Especially the children! So worth it, and its nice for our money to go to this wonderful family instead of big "posh" hotels.
